Help for Heroes: Veterans' Courts
As more men and women in the armed forces complete their service, the number of veterans in Michigan and nationwide has increased. Unfortunately, the stress of serving during times of conflict, and the struggle to readjust to civilian life, can lead to involvement in the criminal justice system.
Veterans' treatment courts serve these men and women by diverting them away from the traditional criminal justice system and into a problem-solving court program.
Seven courts in Michigan now operate veterans' treatment courts; several more are in the planning phases. In this episode of Court Stories, Judges Karen Khalil in Redford District Court and David Jordon, recently retired from East Lansing District Court, share the experience of establishing veterans' courts in their communities
