Article VI, Section 3 of the Michigan Constitution states that the Michigan Supreme Court "shall appoint an administrator of the courts and other assistants of the supreme court as may be necessary to aid in the administration of the courts of this state." The Supreme Court has administrative oversight of Michigan's courts and exercises that oversight through the SCAO.

What's New for Trial Courts

Results of the 2015 Trial Courts Public Satisfaction Survey have been published, revealing that court users are very satisfied with their experiences in Michigan’s trial courts.  On questions ranging from fairness to timeliness, 25,000 people statewide were surveyed late last year as part of the Court’s efforts to measure trial court performance and improve service to the public

With the help of the Trial Court Performance Measures Committee, Michigan's trial courts have now documented a remarkable record of service to the public.  From timeliness to customer satisfaction, we are very proud of the work trial courts are doing as efficient and responsible stewards of public resources.

To build on this record of success, the Committee has endorsed the implementation of two new performance measures (click on the links for detailed information):

  • ADA Compliance will help ensure that persons with disabilities have equal and full access to our court system.

There will be training, best practice information, and other support for both measures, and compliance data will be published in May of next year.

Statewide E-filing Initiative

The key mission of the State Court Administrative Office is to help trial courts improve service to the public. Statewide e-filing will help trial courts become more efficient and improve service to court users. E-filing allows for the filing of court documents from anywhere in the state at any time of the day without having to drive to a court office or send large amounts of printed materials via a delivery service, thereby saving time, gas, parking fees, copy costs, and delivery charges. A statewide e-filing system will also accommodate electronic notice and service of process and provide other expanded benefits to improve the efficiency of court interactions by attorneys, parties, and the public. Additional savings are generated when e-filing is linked to electronic document management systems in the trial courts so that judges and staff can easily access important files at any time and from any place. This is the next step in technological advancement for our courts and may someday result in an entirely paperless court system –serving Michigan residents faster and better.
