Young people in trouble. Families in crisis. Victims of crime, and those accused of crimes. Business owners seeking resolution of their disputes. These are just some of the people who come before Michigan’s courts every day. Their stories are as individual as they are. So too are the stories of the judges, court workers, and many others in the justice system who strive to serve the public.
Court Stories tells these stories, revealing the people who make the justice system work. Sometimes humorous, sometimes serious, Court Stories is a look at the human heart of the courts.
Episode 3: “Help for Heroes: Veterans' Courts”
As more men and women in the armed forces complete their service, the number of veterans in Michigan and nationwide has increased. Unfortunately, the stress of serving during times of conflict, and the struggle to readjust to civilian life, can lead to involvement in the criminal justice system. Veterans’ treatment courts serve these men and women by diverting them away from the traditional criminal justice system and into a problem-solving court program. In this episode of Court Stories, Judges Karen Khalil in Redford District Court and David Jordon, recently retired from East Lansing District Court, share the experience of establishing veterans’ courts in their communities.
