Jane M. Beckering

Judge Beckering has served on the Court of Appeals since 2007. Before taking the bench, Judge Beckering was an attorney in private practice for 17 years. She began her career at McDermott, Will & Emery, P.C. in Chicago, Illinois, before she returned to her hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan and later founded the law firm of Buchanan & Beckering, PLC. She received her undergraduate degree (with distinction) from the University of Michigan and her law degree (cum laude) from the University of Wisconsin. Judge Beckering is a member of the Michigan Supreme Court Committee on Model Civil Jury Instructions and the Steering Committee for the Hillman Trial Advocacy Program.  She also participates in the National Research Judge Program run by the Advanced Science and Technology Adjudication Resource Center (ASTAR).  She is co-editor of Michigan Civil Procedure, published by the Institute of Continuing Legal Education.

Mark T. Boonstra

Judge Boonstra was appointed to the Court of Appeals by Governor Rick Snyder in March, 2012. Prior to his appointment, Judge Boonstra was a senior principal in the law firm of Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, P.L.C., where he practiced law for nearly 27 years, including serving as a Deputy Chair of the firm's Litigation practice group and as Co-Chair of its Appellate Practice section. At the time of his appointment, he was recognized in Best Lawyers in America in the areas of: Antitrust Law; Appellate Practice; Bet-the-Company Litigation; Commercial Litigation; Litigation - Antitrust; Litigation - First Amendment; and Litigation - Securities. He previously also served as a Law Clerk to Hon. Ralph B. Guy, Jr. in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan from 1983 to 1985.
 
Judge Boonstra graduated from the University of Michigan in 1983 with both a Juris Doctor degree and with a Master of Applied Economics Degree. He is also a 1979 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Michigan State University, with a B.A. in Political Science. A native of Muskegon, Michigan, Judge Boonstra graduated from Western Michigan Christian High School in 1975.
 
Judge Boonstra has been active in the State Bar of Michigan, including serving in the Representative Assembly (2005-2011), as Chair of the Section on Antitrust, Franchising, and Trade Regulation (2000-2001), as well as the Federal Bar Association and Washtenaw County Bar Association. He also currently serves on the Michigan Supreme Court Committee on Model Civil Jury Instructions, and as Vice-Chair of the Michigan Judges Retirement Board. Judge Boonstra also serves and has served other community and civic organizations, including as Chair of the Washtenaw Economic Club, President of the Board of the Christian Montessori School of Ann Arbor, and Board Member of the Ann Arbor Area Convention and Visitor's Bureau.

Joel P. Hoekstra

Judge Hoekstra was elected to the Court in 1994. Previously, he worked as an assistant Kent County prosecuting attorney, as a district court judge, and as an adjunct faculty member of Calvin College. Judge Hoekstra received his bachelor's degree from Calvin College and his law degree from Valparaiso University.
Term expires January 1, 2017.
 

Jane E. Markey

Judge Markey was elected to the Court in 1994. Previously, she had served as a district court judge, she was a prehearing attorney and law clerk for the Michigan Court of Appeals, and she worked as an attorney in private practice. Judge Markey received her bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and her law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
Term expires January 1, 2015.
 

William B. Murphy

Judge Murphy was appointed to the Court in 1988. Judge Murphy served as Chief Judge Pro Tem from 1992-96. In November 2009, Judge Murphy was selected as the eighth Chief Judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals. Prior to joining the Court, he was a member of the East Grand Rapids City Commission, a law clerk for the Michigan Court of Appeals, and he worked as an attorney in private practice for 17 years. Judge Murphy has served and continues to serve on numerous civic and bar related organizations and participates regularly as a guest lecturer to students and lawyers. He is an Adjunct Professor at Thomas M. Cooley Law School.  Judge Murphy serves on the Executive Committee of the Council of Chief Judges of the State Courts of Appeal.  Judge Murphy received his bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and his law degree from Wayne State University, cum laude.
Term expires January 1, 2019.
 

David H. Sawyer

Judge Sawyer was elected to the Court in 1986. Previously, he was the Kent County Prosecuting Attorney and a criminal justice teacher at Grand Rapids Junior College. Judge Sawyer received his bachelor's degree from the University of Arizona and his law degree from Valparaiso School of Law.
Term expires January 1, 2017.
 

Douglas B. Shapiro  

Douglas B. Shapiro was born in 1954 in New York City, New York. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History with high distinction from the University of Michigan in 1983. He received his Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School, in 1986. He also studied at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland.
 
Following law school, Judge Shapiro served as a law clerk to Justice James H. Brickley of the Michigan Supreme Court and then as an assistant appellate defender before entering civil trial practice in 1991. In 1995, he became a partner in the law firm of Muth and Shapiro, P.C., where he specialized in personal injury litigation until his appointment on February 2, 2009, as a judge on the Michigan Court of Appeals.
Term expires January 1, 2019.
