About the Court

The Michigan Court of Appeals is one of the highest volume intermediate appellate courts in the country.  It was created by the 1963 Michigan Constitution and heard its first cases in January 1965.  Generally, decisions from final orders of a circuit court, as well as some probate court and agency orders, may be appealed to the court as a matter of right.  Other lower court or tribunal decisions may be appealed only by application for leave to appeal, i.e., with permission of the court.  Read More...​

The 2012 Annual Report is now available. The Annual Report includes a message from Chief Judge Murphy and a statistical and graphical analysis of overall court performance. Also highlighted in the report are initiatives and details from each department.

ATTENTION

Effective Monday, July 1st, the Appellate Digest entries will no longer be prepared in opinions of the Michigan Supreme Court and in published opinions of the Michigan Court of Appeals. Although the Digest is still utilized by some members of the legal community, its use has greatly diminished over the years as commercial legal research services have become more affordable and prevalent. Moreover, the Court can simply no longer afford the costs of producing new Digest entries and of maintaining and upgrading the computer program on which it operates. The existing Digest entries will continue to be available on this public website through the end of the calendar year. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused to those people who utilize the Digest as a legal research tool.

The Michigan Appellate Digest summarizes and indexes all published Michigan Supreme Court and Court of Appeals decisions. The on-line Digest synopsizes published opinions released since 1992, and indexes each issue summary by subject, case name, case number, and statute or rule reference. Searches may be conducted by general topic area or phrase within a topic area.

Digest search results will include published opinions released since January 1992. Some opinions which were released in 1991 but published in 1992 will also be included.
